In 1924, the Vaccaro Brothers Company decided to construct a hospital in La Ceiba in order to provide hospital services for employees and their family members, as well as for the La Ceiba community as a whole.
The Hospital was named Hospital Vicente D'Antoni and was donated to the Vicente D'Antoni Foundation, which is the non-profit organization which still manages the hospital today. The Vicente D'Antoni Foundation is made up of members from Standard Fruit Company of Honduras (Dole) as well as members from the La Ceiba Municipality.
Presently, the Hospital Vicente D'Antoni (HVD) is one of the best hospitals on the Atlantic coast of Honduras and will shortly become the best equipped hospital in the country.
HVD is a general hospital that is incorporated with the National Autonomous University of Honduras and acts as a school hospital.
The Hospital also participates in Stanford University’s Interplast program and has exchange programs in place with the Tulane Medical Center from the University of Tulane and with Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, both located in Louisiana, United States.
Administration
HVD is run by a Board of Directors nominated by Standard Fruit de Honduras and the local authorities. The Board of Directors is made up by a President, Vice-President, three Vocal Proprietors and three Vocal Substitutes named by Standard Fruit de Honduras and three Vocal Proprietors and three Vocal Substitutes named by the city authorities. The Board nominations occur annually and the members can be reelected.
Equipment
The hospital has 56 beds, 30 permanent doctors, 20 visiting doctors covering a wide range of specialties and 80 nurses. It also has a large parking area, 24 hour guard service and a landing area for helicopters.

- Pharmacy with an ample selection of basic medicines including approximately 700 products. This selection is updated annually to ensure that the medicines available meet the health requirements. The pharmacy also is available to hospitalized patients on a 24 hour basis and eight hours a day for ambulatory patients.
- Complete intensive care center including five beds for acute medical problems where the patients receive 24 hour monitoring with sophisticated equipment and specially trained personnel.
