Dolefil Farm and Factory in the Philippines

Dole PhilippinesWelcome to the largest integrated pineapple plantation, cannery and packaging complex in the world!

No less than 25 million cases of processed pineapple – slices, chunks, tidbits, crushed, juice and concentrate – are shipped from Dolefil to our markets around the world every year.

Where are we?

Dole PhilippinesWe are located at Polomolok on Mindanao, the second largest and most southerly Philippines island, well away from the typhoon area. The tropical conditions and even year-round rainfall are ideal for growing sweet and juicy DOLE Pineapples.

We are currently operating on 15,600 hectares, including independent farms in the area.

Almost 6,000 people work full-time on Dolefil Farm. Half of them are men and 90% are members of a union. All workers are at least 18 years old. In line with Dole’s worldwide labor policy, no children are allowed to work on the farm.

Attractive working conditions...

Dole PhilippinesWorkers are well paid at Dolefil; average wages are 83% higher than the legal minimum wage. Everybody also enjoys the benefits of a full social security system providing sickness and disability payment, medical care for employees and dependents, plus a loan and housing program that enables many workers to buy their own homes.

There’s a long list of fringe benefits too, from a family education allowance, maternity assistance and pension plan through to medical benefits, paid vacation leave and allowances for travel, food and meals.

...and social programs

But employee benefits at Dolefil go way beyond pay and protection. The farm workforce enjoys an elementary and high school education for their children, a local church, a 100-bed hospital providing medical care and health education programs, a wide range of sports and recreational facilities, and various personal and professional training programs.

Extensive community benefits

Dole PhilippinesDole’s worldwide Corporate Social Responsibility policy calls for the Company to make meaningful contributions to the protection and sustainability of the environment, development of communities and improvement in people’s lives in areas where it operates. Dole believes that the long-term interests of its farming business are best served when growth and profitability are achieved alongside the development of communities and their people.

Dolefil’s implementation of this policy is impressive. With direct programs and others through its social arm, Mahintana Foundation, Inc. (MFI), the business provides tremendous benefits to the 110,000 people living in the community.

Education

Dole PhilippinesInvestment in schooling is especially apparent with the Dolefil Adopt-A-School program helping to raise teacher and student standards at neighboring elementary schools with training, materials and infrastructure assistance.

For adults there are programs that help develop individual skills, entrepreneurship and new technologies to enhance productivity and community development. Farmer cooperatives are given the opportunity to sell their farm products inside the Dolefil compound, in line with Dolefil’s “Color Your Life” wellness program.

Healthcare

Dole PhilippinesDolefil built the Howard Hubbard Hospital in 1968 to provide medical care to its employees and their families. While employees remain the primary users, many members of the community at large now benefit from its facilities.

Social development

To promote peace, progress and improved quality of life in a peaceful and environment-friendly community, Dolefil through MFI, has been assisting the organization of the Sumbakil Multi-Purpose Cooperative (SMPC) since 2001. The program has helped this community – which is 99.5% Muslim - develop its sanitation, healthcare and agriculture standards, boosting both the economics of the community and women’s participation in the development.

Environmental programs

Dole PhilippinesCertified ISO 14001 in 1999, Dolefil implements an advanced environmental program to ensure sustainable development of its farm and the surrounding communities. In addition to water usage reduction, soil conservation and waste recycling programs, Dolefil operates an ongoing program to reduce the use of crop-protection products. Some products, such as post-harvest fungicides, have been eliminated altogether.

Within the overall environment management program, Dolefil also continuously monitors and improves its air emission and wastewater treatment standards.
