Welcome to Bananito, a company owned farm producing bananas for Dole since 1989! In 2006, Bananito produced a total of 2.519 million boxes of bananas which were shipped to our markets around the world.
Where are we
We are located in Cantón Central de Limón in the Matama District of Costa Rica. The local climate is tropical and humid with temperatures ranging between 23°C and 32°C. The temperature and average rainfall of 250 to 300 cm/year provide the perfect conditions to grow our delicious DOLE bananas.
The farm covers a total of 820 hectares dedicated to the production of bananas including farm roads and other farm buildings.
There are around 5,000 people living in the community surrounding Bananito.
In addition to the employment provided by the Farm, other sources for local employment include the Costa Rican Social Security Medical Center and several shops.
Our workers
589 people work on the Bananito Farm and are involved in all activities, from planting to administration of our business. 10% (59 people) of our employees are female, and all our workers are at least 18 years old. No children are allowed to work on the farm, this being in line with Dole’s worldwide labor policy.
The majority of our workers are between the 25 and 35 years old and have been working on the farm for less than five years.
30% of our workforce on Bananito farm is Nicaraguan.
Attractive working conditions…
The farm pays an average of 92% above the local legal minimum wage.
